The papers include legal documents, literary manuscripts, letters, papers relating to a forgery case in 1940, Rex vs. Ley (Keith), papers relating to a French woman Camille Paoli, photographs and an urn of ashes believed to be of Thomas Ley. The papers are really combined family papers of the Vernon-Ley families and the collection comprises documents relating to T.J. Ley, Emily Lewise Stone Vernon Ley, Russell John Vernon Ley, Clive Vernon Ley, Keith Edward Vernon Ley, Edward Vernon, Edward Vernon (son) and Ethel Jacyntha R. Stone Vernon (T.J. Ley's mistress) who figured prominently in the murder case, (was Mrs Maggie Brooks). The collection also includes a portrait of an unknown woman painted on China.

Ley, Thomas John, 1881-1947

Thomas Ley was a N.S.W. (later Federal) parliamentarian. In 1928 he was defeated in the Federal elections after various ill-fated business dealings and the death or disappearance of a number of opponents. He was found guilty of the murder of a barman John Mudie in 1946 and sentenced to death. He was found insane and transferred to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum where he died on 27 July 1947.
